Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
Part-time academic required to teach ARBC 1022.03: Introduction to Arabic II, Monday/Wednesday, 8:35-9:55, Winter Term (January – April 2024). The successful candidate will be fully responsible for both teaching the class content and assessing the students’ progress (through in-class evaluation, marking assignments, tests, and the final exam, and granting the final grades). They will be available to students in office hours and will meet (at the start of the term and periodically, if necessary) with the Undergraduate advisor for Arabic Studies, to co-ordinate the teaching process and ensure efficiency. This position is supervised by the Chair, Department of Classics with Arabic and Religious Studies.

ARBC 1022 is an introductory Arabic language class, the continuation of ARBC 1021 taught in the Fall term; students enrolled in ARBC 1022 already know the Arabic alphabet (can write and read with complete vocalization), have basic notions of grammar and vocabulary. The teacher will take them to the next level of the introductory stage, by adding new grammatical structures, verb conjugation (at the present and future tenses), and richer vocabulary, conversational skills, etc., introduced in the second part of the textbook, “Mastering Arabic I” (by Jane Wightwick and Mahmoud Gaafar, 2015 edition).
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Applicants are expected to have a high command of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) – including written and oral aspects, vocabulary, and conversation in this linguistic variety – attested through a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Arabic Language or at least a Minor in Arabic Studies with focus on linguistic aspects of MSA. Previous experience in teaching Arabic language at the university level (to non-native speakers) would be an asset, but not an exclusive condition.

The Department of Modern Languages and Classics is seeking an instructor to teach the following course, which will be offered during the 2014-2015 academic year.

ARABIC 1100.1XX/YY Introductory to Arabic – TR 4:00 – 5:15

We require that candidates have at least a Masters Degree or a related field, and a demonstrated record of success at university-level teaching.

In accordance with CUPE Local 3912 Collective agreement (16.06), priority will be given to part-time faculty colleagues who are on the Department’s precedence list. The closing date is June 16, 2014.
