Program Description:

The PhD in Applied Science at Saint Mary’s University allows students to conduct research under the supervision of faculty in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Management Science, Math and Computing Science, and Physics. In this program, students complete original cutting-edge research and receive training in applying their research results.

Course Description:

An introduction to applied research in the natural sciences. Topics will include research ethics, knowledge transfer, entrepreneurship, public outreach and accessing research funding opportunities. The course will be facilitated by scientists who have successfully participated in technology transfer, business faculty and professionals, and program officers from funding agencies.

Qualifications:

Graduate Degree; Demonstrable effectiveness in university-level teaching; Preference for individuals with prior graduate teaching experience in the field of knowledge transfer, research funding, and entrepreneurship. The candidate should also have extensive industry experience liaising with funding agencies that support graduate level research and development.

Remuneration:

Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between Saint Mary’s University and CUPE 3912

Program Description:

The Master of Science in Applied Science Program is a research thesis-oriented, multidisciplinary degree program.  The objectives of the program are:

  • to provide graduate students with the opportunity to conduct research in a single or a multidisciplinary field of study with practical application;
  • to produce graduates with valuable skills in research and communication preparing them for careers in related fields of research and development in industry or government, or
  • for further graduate studies at the doctoral level.

Course Description:

Students analyze scientific data at the advanced level. Topics include multivariate analysis, nonparametric methods, and model selection. During a course project component, students apply the statistical tools learned to a real dataset, ideally from their own thesis research.

Qualifications:

Graduate Degree; Demonstrable effectiveness in university-level teaching; Preference for individuals with prior graduate teaching experience in the field of advanced statistics and quantitative analysis.

Program Description: 

This is the main MSc program for most Science fields at Saint Mary’s University. Students can  conduct research under the supervision of faculty in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering,  Environmental Science, Forensic Anthropology, Geography, Geology, Management Science,  Math and Computing Science, Cognitive and Neuropsychology, and Physics. This two-year  research degree features interdisciplinary training and co-operative employment opportunities. 

Course Description: 

Students develop and strengthen skills in all scientific disciplines that will benefit them throughout  their careers: oral communication and public speaking, written communication and scientific  writing, project planning, time and project management, networking, conflict resolution, and stress  and mental health. Students are exposed to and engage with these topics through a variety of  means, including lectures, seminars, readings, discussions, written assignments, oral and poster  presentations, and written and oral critiques.

Academic Calendar Description:
The instructional part of this course focuses on research project definitions, project planning, and scientific writing. Students are expected to read articles chosen for discussion, contribute to the critiquing process and make several presentations during the course. Students are expected to attend a designated number of seminars either at Saint Mary’s University or at other surrounding research institutions. Students normally enroll in this course in the first year of the Master of Science in Applied Science program.

Qualifications:
” Ph.D. Degree
” Demonstrable effectiveness in university-level teaching
” Preference for individuals with prior graduate student supervisory experience, ideally within a multidisciplinary program

Duties:
Duties include course/lecture preparation/delivery; in-class teaching; preparation and evaluation of all student assessments. The successful candidate will be required to hold office hours and collaborate with faculty members supervising students in the Applied Science program.

Remuneration:
The teaching assignment is 3.0 credit hours of instruction. Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between Saint Mary’s University and CUPE 3912.
